The Art 2014
Each of the hand-selected artists was chosen for their individual success in their respective genres. The artists have donated pieces from their collections that were on auction during the evening.
Heike Allerton-Davies
Heike Allerton-Davies’s work is concerned with creating portraits that reflect a degree of discomfort, and a reality that is blatant but carries many subtle undertones. The people she paints are individuals captured in their realities and her aim is to portray an honesty about them that cannot be created or fabricated.

Ingrid Bolton
Ingrid Bolton is relatively new on the South African Art scene, with her first solo exhibit taking place in 2013, but has already managed to establish herself as a household name.

Anthea Delmotte
Anthea Delmotte is a Namibian born artist who has moved to Potchefstroom at the age of 15. It was here that Anthea was first exposed to formal art at school. At the age of 17 Anthea was approached by a group of designers to participate in a fashion show, which was featured on South African television. Anthea’s unusual designs included black wedding dresses.

Jean Doyle
Jean Doyle has been producing bronze monumental works since 1980. She has produced a number of world-renowned sculptures that are located all over Africa. These include monumental works such as Nelson Mandela’s “Long walk to Freedom” monument situated at the Groot Drakenstein Prison in Paarl.

Keith Calder
Keith Calder occupies a unique position in the art world in that in that he is well known for successfully creating both realistic and stylized sculpture and having both these forms celebrated locally and internationally.

Dylan Lewis
Dylan Lewis is a South African artist who has emerged as one of the foremost figures in contemporary sculpture. Lewis’s work features in private collections throughout the UK, Continental Europe, United States and Australia, and he is one of only a handful of living artists to have had more than one solo auction with Christie’s in London.

Anton Smit
Completely self-taught, the sculptor was awarded the first prize in the SA Association of Arts’ New Signatures Competition in 1979. Following successful exhibitions in Nelspruit, White River, Cape Town and Pretoria, Smit turned to sculpting full-time to cope with the demand for his work by galleries and private collectors alike.

Lionel Smit
Born in Pretoria (South-Africa) in 1982, Lionel Smit lives and works in Cape Town and is known for his large canvasses and unique sculptures. He has been exhibiting locally and internationally for nearly 10 years.

Russell Travers
Russell Travers was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1960. He grew up in Cape Town and in 1981 left South Africa and travelled to Sweden as a refugee and received asylum there. This was granted to him as a war resister and deserter from the South African Military where he had served in both the army and navy.

Marieke Prinsloo
The primary focus and preoccupation of Marieke’s body of work is and has been an exploration of the female form. She is intrigued by the way in which sculpture mimics the three dimensionality of a human presence and thus the slightly surreal dialogue it invites.

Samuel Allerton is a sculptor living in Franschhoek, outside of Cape Town where he has a home and a studio. He studied at Ampleforth College in England and the Slade in London before returning to South Africa to do a degree in sculpture at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT.
